Mouassine Fountain

Fontaine Mouassine

Mouassine Fountain, Marrakech: the 16th-century Saadian public fountain of carved cedar beside the Mouassine Mosque, free to see.

The Mouassine Fountain is a public fountain set into a street wall in the Mouassine quarter, a few minutes from Jemaa el-Fna.

The Saadian sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib had it built in 1562–1563 as part of the Mouassine Mosque complex, with its library, ablutions hall, hammam and Quranic school.

There are two parts: arches with basins for people, and vaulted troughs beside them where donkeys and mules were watered. Look up at the painted and carved cedar canopy, the carved plaster friezes with eight-pointed stars, and the words "The glory is to God".

It is a stop on a walk, not a visit. The paint has faded and traffic squeezes past.

Good to know

  • Mopeds and handcarts pass close; step aside to look.
  • Combine it with Le Jardin Secret, a short walk away.
