El Badi Palace

Palais El Badi

El Badi Palace, Marrakech: hours, ticket prices and tips for the Saadian sultan's ruined palace, its sunken gardens, storks and rampart views.

El Badi was Ahmad al-Mansur's reception palace, begun in 1578 after the Battle of the Three Kings and paid for in part by the ransoms that followed.

About a century later the Alaouite sultan Moulay Ismail stripped it for materials for his new capital at Meknes. What is left is the shell: pisé walls, a vast courtyard, sunken orange gardens and empty pools.

Walk the underground passages, see the Koutoubia's carved wooden minbar shown in its own pavilion, and climb to the walls for views over the medina and the storks' nests.

There is little shade and not much detail left. It is about scale, not decoration.

Good to know

  • Bring a hat and water: most of it is open sky.
  • Steps up to the terrace; the ground is uneven.
  • Photos are allowed.
