Bahia Palace

Palais El Bahia

Bahia Palace, Marrakech: hours, ticket prices and tips for the 19th-century vizier's palace of painted cedar, zellige and garden courtyards.

The Bahia is a grand vizier's house that grew into a palace. Si Moussa, chamberlain to Sultan Moulay Hassan, began it; his son Ba Ahmed, grand vizier, joined neighbouring houses into one between 1894 and 1900.

In 1912 it became the residence of the French Resident-General in Marrakech. The rooms are empty of furniture, so the building itself is the show.

Look up: painted and carved cedar ceilings, stucco, zellige, stained glass. The large marble courtyard and the planted riad courtyards with fountains are the best spots to stop.

It is the most visited palace in the city. Late morning brings the tour groups and the narrow passages fill up.

Good to know

  • Almost all of it is open courtyards and rooms on one level.
  • Little shade in the main courtyard at midday.
  • Photos are allowed.
